Blackfoot sponsors two high school juniors to go to Washington, DC

February 4, 2008 Missoula, Mont

The Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative is pleased to again sponsor two local high school juniors to represent Western Montana at the 14th Annual FRS Youth Tour.  Blackfoot covers all expenses for the tour which will begin May 31 and end June 4, 2008.  The deadline for receiving applications is March 3, 2008.  If you are interested, log on to www.blackfoot.com/youthtour for requirements and instructions.

FCC Commissioner Martin in Arlee
Press Release (August 25, 2003) -- The Blackfoot Companies

FCC Commissioner Kevin Martin was recently in Arlee visiting the Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative central office. Blackfoot Telephone representatives were on hand to show Martin state-of-the-art rural central office switching equipment used to deliver local dial tone and broadband services to the community. Martin also toured the Jocko Valley Public Library where Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative provides a free DSL connection along with two computers for public use. While in Missoula for the Annual Montana Telecommunications Association meeting, Martin praised the deployment of advanced services to rural areas. Also attending were Geoff Feiss, General Manager of the Montana Telecommunications Association, Joan Mandeville, Blackfoot CEO, Bill Squires, Blackfoot Sr. Vice President, and Stuart Morton, Blackfoot Trustee from St. Ignatius.

Blackfoot Telephone Provides Essential Services to Fire Camps
Missoula, MT – August 22, 2003

Clusters of tents are placed throughout the meadow and in spite the camps' rural location the fire camps are high tech. The Strawberry Mountain Fire Camp in Clinton, the Crazy Horse Fire Camp in Condon and the Mineral/Primm Fire Camp in Potomac each have information specialists and communications specialists working on their computers with DSL connections. The high-speed Internet connections via DSL allow the specialists to keep abreast of current weather conditions and keep fire maps updated. "The DSL connections are for official use only," according to Phil Austin with the Lolo National Forest.


Phil Austin is part of a provisioning team for the U.S. Forest Service based out of Missoula. Phil mentioned that part of his role is to equip the camps with the telecommunications services they need. "Staff members use the Internet at the command centers for on-line meetings and for coordinating fire fighting efforts." Right now, more than fifty percent of the entire nation's "hot shot crews" are in Montana fighting fires. Other fire crews fighting our local fires are the Type 1 and Type 2 teams. Having dependable communications systems is a must and having DSL out in these field camps is a significant benefit," according to Mr. Austin. "It's been great working with Blackfoot," says Phil.


When working with fires, there is a need to move quickly. Blackfoot employees have tried their best to respond to the needs of those working the fires. Staff members from all of the departments involved understand the importance of getting telephone services and DSL services installed at the camps. Blackfoot is a local company with local employees and a dedication to our neighbors and customers.

Blackfoot Telephone Supports Firefighting Efforts
Press Release (Seeley Lake, MT – August 15, 2003) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

The field looks like a child’s maze of sticks and tents as technician Randy Teague completes the final steps of the process that will connect firefighters to the world outside of Crazy Horse fire camp. Randy, an installation and repair field technician for Blackfoot Telephone, understands the important role communication plays in supporting area firefighting efforts.

"They’ve got to be able to talk to other crews to see what’s going on to fight these fires,” Randy said, “And they need to be able to call home to let their families know they are OK. I’m glad to be able to help."

To date, Blackfoot Telephone has installed over 100 telephone lines to support seven area fire camps, beginning last Saturday morning, with crews working until dark many nights. The company has also provided wireless phones to area Red Cross emergency shelters and moved the telephone system at the Mission Mountain Girls’ School during their voluntary evacuation to protect it from possible damage.

"We’ve been here a long time and understand the critical role we play in support of firefighting efforts in the areas we serve. Our employees are dedicated to making sure we respond quickly to the demand for service during these times," CEO Joan Mandeville stated.

Blackfoot Mourns Loss of Cooperative’s President, James Couture
Press Release (Missoula, MT – August 1, 2003) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative sadly announces the death of its President, James Couture. Couture passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, after a difficult battle with cancer. Despite his declining health, Couture continued his strong leadership role for the Cooperative through the July Board Meeting. "Jim’s commitment to Blackfoot and to Montana’s rural areas was always apparent," said Joan Mandeville, Blackfoot’s Chief Executive Officer. Couture served on the Board of Trustees for Blackfoot Telephone from 1993 until his death. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Montana Telecommunications Association (MTA), an organization that promotes the interests of rural telephone companies. At its Annual Convention last week, MTA honored the work of Couture on behalf of Montana’s rural communities.

Couture was always a vocal advocate for both his hometown of Arlee and for all of Montana’s rural residents, especially its senior citizens. He was a strong supporter of the Arlee Senior Citizens’ Center and the Arlee Historical Society. He recently championed a donation from Blackfoot for the Arlee Historical Society to publish Cemeteries of the Arlee-Jocko Valley. His support and interest undoubtedly came from his personal history.

Couture was raised in the Jocko Valley and educated in the Arlee Schools. After military service in WWII he attended Washington State University, obtaining a BS in Agricultural Economics. He married his wife, Catherine Rueschenberg in Washington. They had three children, LuAnne, David and Robert.

Couture returned to Montana where he worked for the Montana Power Company for 32 years, retiring as the manager of their real estate department. During this time he was active in land and rights-of-way groups on behalf of the utility industries. After his retirement he returned to the Couture Ranch near Arlee.

"What made Jim a true leader for our company was not only his business background and his strong affiliation with his rural community," Mandeville said. "Jim brought wisdom and great wit to our deliberations. He will be sorely missed by us all."

2 Take Trip to Washington D.C.
Press Release (Missoula, MT – July 15, 2003) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Karen Weaver of Thompson Falls and Kayla Wright of Dixon recently travelled to Washington D.C. as part the Foundation for Rural Service Youth Tour. Both students were sponsored on the all expense paid trip by Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative. The four-day tour brought 100 high school juniors together from across the nation and aims at enriching the lives of rural youth. Activities included educational sessions and sight-seeing. The students were given time to tour the nation's capital and its many attrations. While in Washington D.C., Karen and Kayla learned firsthand about the telecommunications industry and the legislative process. These lectures were greatly enhanced by site visits such as those to the U.S. Capitol and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Karen and Kayla also had the opportunity to meet with industry leaders including members of Congress. While in Washington, the students visited many of the major monuments including the Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, Vietnam, Korean and FDR memorials. They also toured the National Cathedral, the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Electronic Education Equipment (Triple E) Awards Schools Equipment
Press Release (Missoula, MT – January 31, 2003) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

The "Triple E" program is an annual program sponsored by Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative, Missoula Electric Cooperative and Energy Partners. These companies are committed to the educational needs of the children in our rural communities. Blackfoot has contributed to the "Triple E" Program since 1989. The total donations to schools through "Triple E" now stands at approximately $216,000. All of this money has gone out to purchase educational electronic equipment for our students’ use.

Blackfoot is very proud of the "Triple E" Program. Our Electronic Educational Equipment Program has helped out our rural schools with their educational needs. This year’s donation was spent on computers, scanners, digital cameras, televisions, digital projectors, software and more. We purchased equipment for fifty-two schools throughout western Montana and presented the equipment at an awards luncheon on January 13, 2003.

Blackfoot Telephone Hires Human Resource Manager

Blackfoot Telephone recently hired Laura Marshall for the position of Human Resource Manager for the Blackfoot Companies and its 191 full time employees. A graduate of Valparaiso University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Masters in Human Resources Management from Keller Graduate School of Management, Laura brings a wide range of Human Resources training and experience to Blackfoot. Most recently, Laura worked in Billings, Montana where she served as the Human Resource Manager for the City of Billings since 1998. She has 18 years experience in Human Resource work and management. She with her husband Paul, a Hellgate High School and UM Graduate, are excited to be in Missoula. They both enjoy fishing, hiking, biking, golfing and Griz Football.

Blackfoot Telephone Places Installation and Repair Technicians in Rural Communities
Press Release (Missoula, MT, March 29, 2002) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Blackfoot Telephone has recently transferred four Blackfoot employees from the OSP Construction Crew to become Installation and Repair Technicians in the rural areas. Blackfoot felt there was a need to have a quicker response to our customers needs and increase the ability to handle the always-increasing work volumes. The following employees will live in and work out of their assigned communities and be available to the surrounding exchanges as well.

These individuals will be part of the OSP Service Department, reporting to Ken Lanzel, the OSP Service Manager. The Installation and Repair Technician's job duties include installation of new services, such as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines and Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), repair or proactive maintenance of existing services and plant. They will also assist the construction and splicing crews when they are working in the local areas. This will help Blackfoot transition customers to new fiber optics, copper plant, and digital subscriber carriers once new facilities are placed.

Bringing these technicians to the rural communities allows Blackfoot Telephone to reduce customer response time by not having to send them from Missoula and by decreasing the work volume per technician. This is to improve the level of service Blackfoot provides to these areas.

Rural Utility Companies Donate Equipment to Schools
Press Release (Missoula, MT, February 15, 2002) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Electronic Educational Equipment (EEE) donated $24,000 worth of equipment to rural public schools throughout western Montana. EEE, a joint program sponsored by Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Clark Fork Telecommunications, Inc., Missoula Electric Cooperative, Inc., and Energy Partners, LLC, was formed in 1989 with the goal of the program to focus on purchasing equipment for students' use in rural schools.

Since its inception, the EEE Program has donated computers, televisions, digital cameras and other types of educational equipment to schools in areas the four sponsoring companies serve. This year the program expanded to have sixty-four schools participating in the annual event. Total donations to date exceed more than $192,000. On January 17, 2002, EEE awarded 47 schools equipment. 362 pieces of equipment have gone out to eligible schools over the past 13 years.

"Many of these are small schools with funding allocated according to the number of students enrolled. By receiving the equipment from EEE, the schools are able to provide their students educational opportunities using technologies they would not otherwise be able to afford,"Harry LaFriniere, Chairman of the EEE Committee. "We view the students attending these schools as the future of our companies. We feel that it is important for young people to experience the value of cooperative based principles to demonstrate the value of people pulling together to accomplish more than they can as individuals."

Special thanks to the late Bill Nelson, co-chairman of the EEE luncheon committee, for his commitment to this project. Bill will be missed by us all.

Enhanced 911: Being Worked on by Some Counties within Blackfoot Telephone Service Areas
Press Release (Missoula, MT, January 23, 2002) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Over the past couple years, many counties within Blackfoot Telephone service areas have been working on implementing enhanced 9-1-1 (E 9-1-1) services. E 9-1-1 is a system which routes an emergency call to the 9-1-1 call center closest to the caller, AND automatically displays the caller’s physical address on the computer screen. Also displayed is the caller’s telephone number, which can automatically be redialed if the line is disconnected. Therefore, if the caller is unable to speak, or unable to provide location information, he or she can still be located with a map.

To gain the full benefits of enhanced 9-1-1 service, each telephone number must be linked to a physical address assigned by the county and on file with the local telephone company, so that any 9-1-1 caller can be located by emergency service providers. In addition to providing the location for emergency responders, the physical address of the telephone will also determine how the 9-1-1 call is routed. Enhanced 9-1-1 uses a caller’s location, not telephone exchange, to direct a call to the appropriate call answering center. This contrasts with current 9-1-1 service, which sometimes cannot route the call to an answering center capable of dispatching the emergency assistance to the caller’s location.

Creating physical addresses requires naming all roads, including private roads, with unique names and assigning numbers consistently to all properties. Once the road names and property numbers are assigned and adopted by the county, the new physical addresses can be used for 9-1-1 service, for mail delivery, utility companies, delivery services and others. Most of the counties within Blackfoot Telephone service areas have contracted with a mapping company to map all roads and structures for this purpose.

Creating physical addresses is a responsible act of local government. By assigning physical addresses, a community allows its residents to take full advantage of enhanced 9-1-1 service. Ways to assist in the process of implementing E 9-1-1 are:

  1. Call your county courthouse to see if they are working on E 9-1-1.
  2. Find out what physical address is assigned to your location.
  3. Call your local telephone company to make sure the correct physical address is on file for each of your phone lines.

Blackfoot Telephone Employees Organize Food Drive and Charitable Fundraiser: Three Rural Area Food Banks and Two Charities Benefit Missoula, MT
Press Release (Missoula, MT, December 14, 2001) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

The employees of Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative, parent company of the Blackfoot Companies, have once again opened their hearts to the needs of the season. Through various activities during November and December, a total of $3748.00 was raised for charity and 3952 pounds of food was collected. The money will be divided between Habitat for Humanity and the Ronald McDonald House. The food will be split amongst the Food Banks in Superior, Noxon and Philipsburg. A silent auction, a live auction and a two team competition comprised the activities which raised the money and food. “The spirit of the season and some good hearted competition among the Blackfoot employees is what made this year’s events so successful and fulfilling,” Earl Owens, CEO of the Blackfoot Companies. “Blackfoot is more than a place to work, it is a family. The staff and management believe we don’t just live in a community, we are a part of the community. This time of year the spirit of the holiday season comes alive and we are happy to be a part of it.”

Vision Net Open House
Press Release (Missoula, MT, October 12, 2001) -- The Blackfoot Telecommunications Group

Vision Net Inc. and Blackfoot Telephone recently held an Open House at the Vision Net Studio located at Blackfoot Telephone's Missoula Office on North Russell in Missoula. Over 40 business customers were able to view active video conferences being held between Great Falls, Billings, and Missoula. Vision Net Inc. which is headquartered in Great Falls has nearly 80 sites in Montana.
